I am writing the blog as a way to keep myself thinking about these changes.
body change
I am not at my highest weight, but I am grossly overfat. I weigh in at 248, 93 lbs over the weight I was at when I finished basic training almost 27 years ago. The plan I have is relatively simple, and involves several ideas:
1- My diet is now a very low fat (near) vegan, and I have eased into it over the last month. I am at an age where I want my heart and blood health are my number one health concern. From the information I have gathered, McDougall, Fuhrman, Pritikin, the China Study and Barnhard all seem to agree on several things, and I am going to apply the consensus.
- The vast bulk of your diet should come from unrefined plant based foods.
- Most of the diets are much lower in fat than the standard american diet (SAD), and if you view the macro-nutrient combination ( Protein Carbs and Fats) it is close to the values of
- At least 80 percent of the calories come from carbs.
- No more than 10 percent of the calories come from protein.
- No more than 10 percent of the calories come from fat.
- Since the majority of the food is low in calorie density, you need to get your calories from other sources than what are in the SAD. McDougall suggests grains, Fuhrman beans and some grains, etc. I intend to use beans, grains and fruits all for the bulk of my calories. The rest of my diet will be vegetables. I will have less than 5 % of my calories on any day from non-vegan sources.
3- The Shangri-La Diet . This isn't a diet, as much as a protocol. The method I am using is nose-clipping. I am wearing nose-clips while drinking a blended drinks with 600 to 1000 calories. Wearing nose-clips prevents taste. If you don't taste food it lowers your setpoint. If your setpoint goes down your appetite is suppressed. There is a good deal of information on this in Seth Robert's book and his forum.
4- Fast 5. Fast 5 is a protocol where you restrict the hours in which you consume calories which causes fewer spikes in insulin in your day. This will be used later.
Both Fast 5 and the Shangri-La diet have worked for me in the past.
5- Cold protocol from Ray Cronise. I am applying icepacks and taking cold showers.
enough for the first post.
